    ‘OVERGANGSZONE’. Kunst en onderzoek in het transformatieproces van het ENCI-gebied

    Het project ‘OVERGANGSZONE’ is een project over verbindingen, participatie en zichtbaarheid; een project over kunst en onderzoek en de presentatie daarvan in het ENCI-gebied, een locatie waarbij de verschillende beleefde noties van plaats liggen in de kracht van de verandering.

    Het interessante is, dat er in die overgangszone allerlei nieuwe plekken en mogelijkheden gecreëerd worden, die een uitdaging zijn voor artistiek onderzoek in situ. Al die plekken worden ‘bemand’ door verschillende partijen of stakeholders, die allen een eigen belang hebben bij de (her-)bestemming en inrichting van het ENCI-gebied, dat de komende jaren zijn voorlopige voltooiing moet krijgen (denk bijv. aan Natuurmonumenten, de ENCI en haar werknemers, nieuwe bedrijven, omwonenden, recreanten, etc., maar ook het Natuurhistorisch Museum Maastricht). Deze stakeholders bieden hun eigen perspectief en creëren zo hun eigen notie van plaats. Wij zijn van mening dat al die verschillende bemande plekken naast elkaar kunnen bestaan, en, hoe controversieel misschien ook, samen het geheel in een groter verband kunnen vertellen. Een uitgelezen kans voor kunstenaars, die het ‘onverenigbare’ als uitgangspunt voor hun onderzoek nemen, en dat zichtbaar, ervaarbaar en bespreekbaar maken.

    Daarvoor zijn 12 jonge kunstenaars uitgenodigd, die gedurende twee jaar de verschillende partijen volgen, in gesprek met ze gaan, en ze als het ware een stem geven als basis voor hun onderzoek en werk. De status van het onderzoek, de samenwerking met de verschillende partijen en wat dat oplevert, zijn via speciale publieksmomenten op gezette momenten en op diverse daarvoor geëigende en experimentele wijzen aan het publiek gepresenteerd. Tevens is het publiek daarbij uitgenodigd daarin te participeren. Zo zijn de eerste resultaten van het artistieke onderzoek gepresenteerd op de 23ste Annual Meeting van de European Association of Archaeologists (EAA-Maastricht), dat van 30 augustus tot 3 september 2017 in Maastricht plaatsvond. Ter gelegenheid hiervan vond er een grootschalig publieksmoment plaats in de ENCI-groeve op 3 september, waar alle deelnemende kunstenaars hun onderzoek in samenwerking presenteerden. Een tijdelijk ArtLab werd vervolgens in februari/maart 2018 betrokken door de kunstenaars in het Natuurhistorisch Museum Maastricht, waar de kunstenaars hun werk verder ontwikkelen en presenteren ten overstaande van het publiek. Dit mondde uit in een afsluitende presentatie tijdens de Museumnacht Maastricht, 13 april jl.

    De kwaliteit van het project ‘OVERGANGSZONE’ ligt in het ‘onverenigbare’, het zichtbaar maken en het verbinden van de verschillende noties van plaats, die ontstaan vanuit verschillende perspectieven en uit diverse gecombineerde praktijken. Dat benutten en tonen de kunstenaars met hun kunst en onderzoek.

    Krien Clevis is curator/senior researcher van dit interdisciplinair kunst- en onderzoeksproject 'OVERGANGSZONE, dat in samenwerking met Stichting Ontwikkelingsmaatschappij ENCI-gebied (SOME) in september 2016 tot stand is gekomen. In de uivoering wordt verder samengewerkt met het Natuurhistorisch Museum (NHMM), het Centre Céramique (CC), de Universiteit Maastricht (UM) en het Lectoraat Autonomie en Openbaarheid in de Kunsten (AOK) van de Faculty of Arts (MaFAD), te Maastricht.

    “…Het type onderzoek wordt ingekleurd door verschillende methoden van onderzoek, zoals bijvoorbeeld toegepast in etnografisch veldwerk. Dit zijn methoden, waarbij het observeren, noteren, schrijven, documenteren, belangrijke tools zijn om ook het niet-zichtbare, datgene waar niet over gesproken wordt, of letterlijk: de stilte zelf van de plek – noem het de genius loci – te  kunnen vatten. De kennis die dat oplevert is een ‘lokale, intieme, belichaamde kennis’, een kennis die tot stand komt door nabije uitwisseling met de plek en haar ‘bewoners’, de kennis van het ‘onverenigbare’, een kennis die zich toont in het maken en doen van de kunstenaar, waar de verschillende samenwerkende partijen belangrijk onderdeel van zijn, en publiek maakt door middel van een presentatie, een website en de publieksmomenten.”

    ‘TRANSITION ZONE’. Art and research during the transformation of the ENCI area

    ‘TRANSITION ZONE’ is a project about connections, participation and visibility. It is a project about art and research, and the presentation of its results in situ, in the ENCI area. This special location is one in which various experienced notions of place are making particular changes possible.

    In this transition area all kinds of new places and possibilities are created that are relevant for artistic research in situ. These places are all staffed by various parties or stakeholders, who each have their own interest in the (re-) allocation and rearrangement of the ENCI quarry, which is scheduled to be completed provisionally in the next few years. The different stakeholders – including Natuurmonumenten, ENCI employees, new companies, local residents, recreationists, as well as the Natural History Museum Maastricht – all provide their own perspective and create their own notion of place in this way. We think that these various parties can exist side by side in this special location, and tell their own story, no matter how controversial they may be. This offers distinct opportunities for artists who take the ‘incompatible’ as a starting point for their research and who seek to make this aspect visible, experienceable and negotiable by means of their work.

    Consequently, 12 young artists are invited who follow the different parties involved, for two years. They do so through conversations and giving them a voice, which provide them a basis for their research and work. The status of the research, the collaboration among the various parties and the results are presented to the public at specific moments, in several qualified and experimental ways. At the same time the public is invited to participate in these specific events. The first results of the artistic research were presented at the 23rd Annual Meeting of the European Association of Archaeologists (EAA-Maastricht), held from 30 August until 3 September 2017 in Maastricht. A one day manifestation was organsed at the 3rd of September, were all the results of the artists in collaboration were presented in the ENCI quarry. Furthermore a temporary ArtLab was engaged by the artists in February/ March 2018 in the Natural History Museum Maastricht, where the artists has developed and presented their work to the public. This resulted in a final presentation during the 'Museum night' Maastricht at April 13 last.

    The special character of the ‘TRANSITION ZONE’ is its ‘incompatibility’, as well as the creation of ‘visibility’ and the connection of different notions of place, which arises from the various perspectives and combined practices. The artists will utilize and showcase this special character through their art and research.

In the execution of the project, there is further collaboration with the Natural History Museum (NHMM), the Centre Céramique (CC), de University of Maastricht (UM) and the Lectorship Autonomy and Public Sphere in the Arts (AOK) of the Faculty of Arts in Maastricht (MaFAD), Maastricht.
